dimmed-lights

Well, the answer is yes.  And no.  It depends.   Older style dimmers still use the full amount of power and dissipate the excess energy as heat.  Newer electronic dimmers do save electricity by reducing the amount of power supplied to the light bulbs and therefore will save you money.

Not all forms of home lighting are suitable for dimmers, so when you buy lamps you want to dim you should check what it says on the box.  Some compact fluorescent bulbs and LED lamps will work with a dimmer and some will not.  Some will work with an iron core dimmer, some will only work with a leading edge or trailing edge electronic dimmer.

And some will constantly flicker, no matter what type of dimmer you use.  Halogen lamps will usually work fine.

A new electronic dimmer will set you back around $70 plus installation costs, so it may take a while to recover your investment through power savings, but dimmers are a great way to change and control the lighting effects in your home.
