New Tasmanian legislation requires you to have the correct type of approved smoke alarm in your property, from the beginning of May this year.

Not all smoke alarms comply with the new regulations.  Even if your property already has a smoke alarm you may not be meeting your obligations under the new legislation.

The only two types of alarms that meet the new requirements are:

1. Hard wired, 240 volt alarm with 9v battery back up.
2. Battery operated, with 10 year lithium-ion, non-removable battery.

All types of hard-wired smoke alarms will meet the current requirements, but the battery-only type alarms must have a non-removable 10 year battery.

Both ionisation and photo-electric type alarms comply with regulations, however as prices are now similar for both types Mance Electrical recommends that only photo-electric alarms should be installed.

Hard wired alarms are usually preferred, however sometimes it’s just too difficult or expensive to get wiring to the ideal position for a smoke alarm.

For example, in the downstairs area of a two storey home, or where the ceilings are solid concrete or have no access due to a flat roof or catherderal ceiling.

In these cases a battery alarm will solve the problem quickly and easily.
